So, the crossover has started and J.J. Abrams is slowly bringing in "his people" from Star Trek into the new Star Wars 7 movie. Get your lighsabers ready 'cause this is some fresh Star Wars 7 news! The first of what is likely to be many is Michael Kaplan, the costume designer who has worked both on the movies Star Trek (2009) and Star Trek: Into the Darkness (2013), but these are of course not his only credits. You may have seen his distinctive design in movies such as Blade Runner, Fight Club or MI: Ghost Protocol. There are of course more credits to his name, but not as popular as the ones mentioned above. So, this does prove that Michael Kaplan is an established and experienced designer, but what will his role in the new movie be? And more importantly - how will he contribute to Star Wars 7?
Michael Kaplan has a much harder job that one might be willing to admit. Costume design seems like something that isn't all that important, but I can assure you that it is! Kaplan's job will be a lot harder than his role in Star Trek I can tell you that! Why? Well, in Star Trek he had the ability to adopt most of the old style and the sequel movie shouldn't have been much trouble since he was praised for his work in the first one.
However, with Star Wars 7 he does have a much harder role to play. On one hand, a lot is being expected of him, especially to preserve the old design. On the other hand, he has a lot of innovating to do. As The Jedi Guardian has noted, the new movie will be about change and by this we don't refer to the change of ownership, but rather all the changes that are happening in the galaxy now that the Empire is defeated. This doesn't just mean that the rebels will need new uniforms and I am sure you are well aware that this job doesn't look all that great so far.
After all, Kaplan is bound be criticized that he only got the job because of his former work with J.J. Abrams and fans are bound to send a negative wave of hate towards him if he doesn't do his job right. Of course, perhaps I am overestimating things, but from what I've read on blogs and forums, this seems rather true.
Either way, this is what Kaplan had to say about his new role in the Star Wars 7 movie:
I’ve just learned I’ll be working on the new Star Wars movie, again with J.J. Everything just got formalized [last week], I haven’t even had the chance to talk to anyone about it all other than to be told ‘welcome aboard. It’s a little too soon to know exactly what’s in store but I’m excited, absolutely, to get to work on another prestigious sci-fi series.
Well, those words do have merit - this is really a big opportunity for him! But one must wonder - just how many people from Star Trek is J.J. Abrams going to invite to the Star Wars 7 set? Either way, we will keep you informed so follow us for more Star Wars 7 news!
